- Windhoek Accommodation - Namibia Accommodation -

Okomitundu lies in the heart of Namibia and stretches over an area of more than 18 000 hectares of fascinating diverse bush savannah. Less than two hours' drive from Windhoek, Okomitundu is the ideal holiday destination.

Our guests may feel at home in eight very spacious and comfortable rooms, each with its own veranda. There are two heated swimming pools, making it possible to even be used during the winter months. One of the many highlights at Okomitundu is its typical African culinary cuisine in a personal family atmosphere.

Since June 2005 Okomitundu is home of Okatumba Wildlife Research (OWR), a Namibian non-profit research organisation (www.okatumba.de). For certain rates visitors of Okomitundu may join daily research activities of OWR like checking box traps to capture carnivores (cheetah, leopard, brown hyena), spoor tracking, radio telemetry, game counts or waterhole observations.

OWR conducts applied research on the habitat “farmland” in order to ensure the long-term viability of wildlife in non-conservation areas. The projects are conducted in close co-operation with Namibian Ministries and several Universities in Europe.

Okomitundu stretches over an area of more than 18 000 hectares on which there are various opportunities to watch game. During a game drive in an open all-wheel-drive vehicle or during a horse-riding excursion you will meet various species along the road. There are also a few natural hides or raised hides especially at water holes where photographers will have the chance to take close-ups from the animals as they come very close.

Over 200 different species have been identified at Okomitundu, among them the ostrich, kori bustard, black korhaan, helmeted guinea fowl, hornbills, various eagles and goshawks, weavers, lilac-breasted roller, hoopoe, to name just a few.

Whether you are lying at the swimming pool, go for a walk or join a game drive in an open all-wheel-drive vehicle, you have ample opportunities to see a lot of birds. One of the highlights is sitting at a hide at a waterhole just before sunset and watch thousands of Namaqua sand grouse coming to drink.

Okomitundu offers guided horse riding excursions on the farm, the length depending on the riders. Overnight excursions to neighbouring farms can also be arranged.

Namibia has a long history of hunting tradition. Because of the strict legislation on wildlife and nature conservation Namibia has a high density of game.

Professional hunter Horst Fechter is guiding hunting expeditions. Trophies from this area are among the biggest in the country and include kudu, Oryx, mountain zebra, hartebees, blesbuck, springbuck, steenbuck and warthog. Other species can be hunted on neighbouring farms within the conservancy. Hunters normally bring their own rifles, which they are used to, but we also have rifles available on the farm. Field preparation of the trophies on the farm is included in the daily tariffs. We also organize for trophies to be delivered to a taxidermist or a shipping agent.

Paragliders dream of various mystic flights: one of them is a flight in one of the most beautiful areas in the world with very active thermionics - Namibia. The highest situated starting place in Namibia is at Okomitundu on Kudu Mountain (1660 metres above sea level) From the starting places you can look down on the farming area, which lies 400 metres below. There are various starting places from where you can start in all directions.

With an aero plane you can cover vast distances in a short period of time and without problems reach the furthest parts of our fascinating country - from the Kaokoland and Etosha National Park in the far north down to Fish River Canyon in the deep south, from the Skeleton Coast in the West across the borders into Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa. Okomitundu can ideally be used as a base from where to undertake fly-in safaris to the many places of interest.

About 800 metres away from the farmhouse is an observatory (size 5 x 7 metres) with a sliding roof. The distance from the farmhouse ensures absolutely clarity of the night without any disturbing lights. A 8" Celestron telescope with a 6 x 30 finder scope is mounted on a permanent column with a Vixen GP mount for stargazing and photography. If you have the correct adapters you can also mount your own telescope. There is also enough space for putting up further instruments, which can stay at the observatory for the duration of your visit and are absolutely safe.

The atmospheric conditions in Namibia are of the best in the world, which makes Namibia very popular among astronomers. In addition they can also enjoy very comfortable accommodation and the generous hospitality of their hosts.

Sit back, relax and enjoy!!!

We are looking forward to your visit!
Till then - "Clear Skies"!
