A two and a half hour drive or one hour flight from the Lanseria Airport is all that separates the fast-paced city Life of Johannesburg from the calm green eden that is Welgevonden Private Game Reserve. Mhondoro Game Lodge is a malaria free area.
Welgevonden Private Game Reserve consists of 42 000 hectares of African bushveld.Rocky outcrops where leopards watch from their hiding places to wide open terrain where the Zebra, Wildebeest and Impala graze.
Dining at Mhondoro is an experience. Mhondoro provides breakfast, after your early morning game drive. Breakfast is either a full English breakfasts at the lodge or 'bush breakfasts' in the wild. Picnics en route or lunches at the lodge are available for those arriving mid-day.
Afternoon tea at Mhondoro will be served shortly before your afternoon game drive. Mhondoro offers four course dinners ranging from international cuisine served at the lodge's dining room to braais served in the boma around a fire under the African skies. Mhondoro boasts a wine cellar fully stocked with the best South African wines.
The paths to the main game lodge and between the chalets offer tantalizing glimpses of the waterhole situated just in front of the game lodge.
Four luxuriously appointed private game lodge chalets are located along the ridge overlooking the waterhole and adjacent plains with the Waterberg Mountains in the distance.
A maximum of 10 guests may stay at the game lodge, ensuring personal attention and care from your hosts at all times. Each chalet has its own elegant sense of style and décor, designed to make you feel pampered, spoiled and special. Large double sliding doors exit onto your private viewing sundeck where you can relax and watch Africa pass by below you.
The en-suite bathrooms have a choice of indoor shower, hippo sized bath or a secluded outdoor shower where you can pelt yourself with steaming hot water.

There can be nothing better than relaxing in the pool with an ice cold drink and the African sun warming your shoulders.

Here guests can relax and unwind while reading up on some of the animals and birds seen in the day's game drives.
Water Hole
The deck of the main lodge is the ideal place to recline in cool comfort while watching the animals drink at Mhondoro's private waterhole.
Gym
Our fully equipped gym offers guests the chance to exercise in safety while watching the animals at the waterhole less than 150m away.
Welgevonden supports 75 species of animals, including the Big Five (Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Buffalo and Rhinoceros) and over 350 species of birds. It boasts an amazing variety of antelope from the dainty Klipspringer to the mighty Eland and is home to the largest private population of white rhinoceros in the world.
Game viewing is done in specially designed open vehicles equipped with elevated seating and adequate protection from the elements.
Foot tracking is also available for those wishing to experience a more intimate relationship with the bush and its fauna.
Rock Art
Mhondoro offers its visitors the opportunity to view some of the only surviving rock art from the indigineous San people who lived in the Waterberg region. If you enjoy history then Mhondoro can arrange a day trip for you to be transported back into the period when the San people inhabited Welgevonden. Here you will be able to view some of the only surviving rock paintings and art forms from the San people in the Waterberg region. Although this is not quite bushveld hiking it is a worthwhile expedition to learn more about the history of the area.
Guests are treated to snacks and a welcome drink at the Main Gate boma and are then transferred directly to the Lodge. Sundowners and snacks are served on the evening game drives. The rangers usually choose magnificent spots such as atop a mountain ridge where you can stand and stare at the majestic beauty around you and enjoy a fine South African chardonnay. Hot beverages and snacks will keep you warm on the early morning drives.
Getting in touch with nature
Most people enjoy nature in way one or another, whether you enjoy camping or game viewing the best way to get in touch with nature is to take part in bushveld hiking. Not everyone is the type of person that enjoys bushveld hiking but many people do enjoy luxury and being pampered. At Mhondoro, a five star luxury game lodge, you can enjoy the intimate game viewing experience of bushveld hiking and then afterwards you can be pampered in th lodge to ensure all round enjoyment.
The bushveld hiking is arranged with special consideration to the guests needs; what would you like to do or see? How long or far would you like to walk? These are important aspects to consider before you start of on your journey, otherwise you might get less than you wanted or be walking for longer than you intended. Weather also plays a role in the bushveld hiking and when the weather permits, this activity is a popular choice.
Apart from the bigger animals that you might see including the legendary big five, various antelope species and numerous small creatures you might even be lucky enough to see the “little five”. The “little five” comprises of the rhino beetle, the ant lion, the buffalo weaver, the leopard tortoise and the elephant shrew and could make your bushveld hiking experience just so much more exciting.
Weddings
Mhondoro is the perfect bushveld venue for a small intimate wedding offering 5 star service and accommodation for up to 10 guests. The wedding services are usually held either at Mhondoro's private waterhole under beautiful African trees or on a rocky outcrop with never-ending views of Welgevonden Game Reserve and its surrounds. Tables and chairs are set up in the bush for the wedding party who are often visited by curious 4 legged guests eager to be part of the celebration.
The guests have the choice of celebrating the union with wedding cake and Champaign in the bush directly after the ceremony or returning to the main lodge for their culinary delights. Our team of dedicated and experienced chefs will wow the couple and their family and friends with a feast for all the senses blending traditional and ethnic fare.
The wedding party are free to enjoy the rest of the celebration as they please - either dancing up a storm African style around a huge bon-fire in our outdoor boma, soaking away the hours in the Jacuzzi, relaxing in the steam room or simply enjoying the atmosphere of good company and great wine in the Main Lodge.
Larger groups of up to 20 guests can be accommodated upon special request.
Conferences

One of the features that makes this bushveld conference venue so unique, apart from all the amenities that are synonymous with a business meeting venue, is the private waterhole positioned exactly in front of the main lodge sundeck.
Guests attending a meeting or workshop can also make arrangements to view the big five between sessions. The Mhondoro lodge and bushveld conference venue offer daily game drives to guests.
Only ten visitors are lodged at Mhondoro at a time. The meeting room seats under 25 people and visitors are accommodated in four very secluded thatched chalets. One of the chalets is an exclusive double bedroom suite. It has its own private and very large sitting room. This deluxe suite also has a Jacuzzi. All the chalets have their own private sundeck, en-suite bathroom and outside shower.
All of the rooms are fitted with fans and fireplaces. The en-suite bathrooms consist of indoor and outdoor showers and a very spacious hippo sized bath. All the chalets were built to ensure that visitors have a stunning view of the waterhole.
After a hard day of conferencing, guests can look forward to the enjoyment of a marvelous feast. The meals are specially prepared by skilled and devoted chefs, skillfully joining traditional tastes and ethnic cuisine to create mouth-watering fusion feasts.
A gym enables attendees to stick to their workout programs and is a brilliant way to get rid of the stress of the day. The lodge also offers guests a lovely steam room and splash pool.
The Mhondoro lodge provides attendees a shuttle service to pick them up from the airport on arrival and drop them off for departure. The bushveld conference venue boasts a private helipad that gives event managers the option to fly attendees in via helicopter.
