Le Pommier

Stellenbosch - Western Cape - Map

Le Pommier is located on part of the historical, 300 year old Zorgvliet farm, which in 1692 was first granted to one Casper Wilders (an Austrian mercenary soldier previously in the employ of the Dutch East Indian Company), in 1703 Johannes Mukder, the first Landdrost of Stellenbosch, acquired the farm.

An extract from an historical note written on the back of the original title deed in 1703 reads “This place was picked out by the Dutch Government of past times…and is well known to be in situation, richness of soil, comfort of buildings and all other respects as one of the best places in the district”

Situated at the heart of the Cape’s most prized vineyards and export fruit region, the part of the farm on which Le Pommier now stands once comprised an apple orchard from which the French name “Le Pommier” or “The Apple Tree” is derived.
