Travel to the Cape West Coast and experience one of the five best destinations in South Africa - the picturesque fishing village of Paternoster.

 

This picturesque fishing town, 15km Northwest of Vredenburg, is one of the oldest coastal towns along the West Coast and is famous for its crayfish. There are many whitewashed fishermen's cottages dotted along a long, white beach. In the town some of the atmosphere of a fishing community of a bygone era is preserved.

Our Villa is a private holiday house situated on the private beach side called Bekbaai. The Villa is upmarket, neat and very well equipped.

Paternoster, meaning "Our Father”, took its name from the heartfelt prayers of shipwrecked Portuguese sailors. Whales and Dolphins also visit these water ten months of the year.

In spring many flower lovers’ stay here to visit the impressive Columbine nature Reserve just 3 km away. Tietiesbaai (made famous by Pieter Pieterse) forms part of the Columbine Nature Reserve and are frequented by campers and caravaners, especially in December.

Columbine Nature Reserve is about 16km from Vredenburg and 3km from Paternoster. The bay, which is part of the reserve, has many picnic spots and braai facilities. There are basic overnight facilities and ablution blocks.

The Lisboa wrecked on Soldiers Reef – Paternoster: On 23 October 1910, the Lisboa ran aground on Soldiers Reef near Paternoster. The wreck of the Lisboa is particularly interesting because it was the first occasion on the South African coast on which radiotelegraphy was used to summon help by a ship in distress.

West Coast Fossil Park

You can visit the Fossil Park and see the remains of mega tooth sharks, sabre-tooth cats the size of lions, giant ostrich, extinct elephants and much more.

Paternoster on the West Coast must rank as one of the finest sea kayaking spots in South Africa. Dramatic scenic panoramas are complemented by a rich variety of animal life, seals, dolphins, whales and birds. No experience of kayaking is necessary because a competent guide guides all trips and kayaks are very stable. Adventure Activities by tour operators such as the National, Provincial and Local Guides.

Boat based Whale watching. West Coast Adventures offers a 3-hour cruise from Port Owen Marina to the Berg River. See where the Southern Right Whales play in the surf.

The Voorstrandt Restaurant is situated in a 60-year-old quaint red and green tin house, right on the white sandy beach with panoramic views of the sand, sea and sky. Meals, including breakfast, are served from 10am to 10pm. Enjoy an idyllic sunset whilst watching whales play in the bay.

At the Paternoster Hotel, is situated at the entrance of the village. One can enjoy a choice from the Al la Carte menu. The hotel boasts a unique bar, which has to be seen to be believed. A popular venue for Saturday afternoon sport viewing.

You can also enjoy a quick "fish and chips" meal from the fish market, situated near the beach.

From Cape Town Airport. Follow the Epping/N7 signs. Stay on the N7 until the left turn to Melkbosstrand. @ The Robot, take the R27 turn-off to your right. Carry on to the Vredenburg/Hopefield/Airforce Base sign. Turn left to Vredenburg. Carry straight through Vredenburg into Paternoster. From Cape Town region, follow the R27 to the West Coast. Carry on to the Vredenburg/Hopefield/Airforce Base sign. Turn left to Vredenburg. Carry straight through Vredenburg into Paternoster. On your arrival in Paternoster, please call Huibrè on 083 988 4645 for further directions, and collection of the keys.
