Crossing Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt, is not for the fainthearted. The word "safari" is Swahili for "travel" and Kenya is where it all begins. The Kenya we experience is relatively unspoilt, far from the popular tourist routes. Despite images portraying Ethiopia as a country ravaged by famine and drought, much of the 'Roof of Africa' is fertile and well-watered, with awesome scenery. Sudan is as flat as Ethiopia is mountainous, the people friendly, their hospitality genuine. Combining this with amazing desert scenes makes for a country really worth visiting. We then head for the lush mountains of Uganda, home to the endangered mountain gorilla. The thrill of crouching quietly only meters away from these enormous yet gentle primates is hard to match.
