DAY ONE
Depart Johannesburg
International Airport for Kilimanjaro. On arrival at Kilimanjaro
Airport you will be met by your driver/guide and transferred
in your private 4x4 to Mountain Village Lodge (about ½ hour)
to overnight.
Mountain Village Lodge is situated twenty minutes from Kilimanjaro
Airport, in the heart of a coffee estate. The lodge has uninterrupted
views of both Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance and Mount Meru
nearby. The accommodation, thatched with banana stems, is in
romantic rondavels set amongst tropical shade trees; most with
views of the hotels own volcanic Lake Daluti. Capture the
real feel of Africa in comfortable en-suite bedrooms decorated
with a rich variety of local crafts. The Fountain restaurant
serves high quality international cuisine blended with local
flavour and the hotel has a bar and a well-stocked shop.
|
| |
Spend one night at Mountain Village Lodge
on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis.
After breakfast you will be collected and
driven to Lake Manyara National Park with a picnic lunch and
a full days game drives en route before arriving at Lake Manyara
Serena.
One of the smaller national parks, Manyara contains a large
variety of country; the rift wall, ground water forest, acacia
woodland, open grassland, marshes and the lake's foreshore.
This varied habitat provides optimum conditions for a wide variety
of wildlife each of them exploiting separate parts of the area.
Added to this, some four hundred species of birds have been
recorded in the park.
The park is dominated by the long narrow lake - often-tinged
pink with countless flamingos - lying against the western wall
of the Rift Valley.
|
Situated on the "Mto-wa-mbu" escarpment,
overlooking the Great Rift Valley and a stunning soda lake is
Lake Manyara Serena. Lake Manyara's flamingoes and great birds
of prey are world-renowned and provided inspiration for the
lodge design where swooping curves are complemented by soft,
geometric patterns. Each of the seventy rooms is in an individual
chalet overlooking the Rift Valley and lake. They are airily
decorated with en suite bathrooms and air conditioning. The
sapphire blue horizon pool, main lounge
and restaurant offer stunning views across the plains.
Spend one night at Lake Manyara Serena on a full board
basis.

DAY THREE & FOUR
Early start today
and a long drive, via Ngorongoro into the Serengeti. Game drive
enroute with a picnic lunch before arriving at The Serengeti
Serena Lodge.
The Serengeti Serena is set high on a hill overlooking the Seronera
plains with its countless herds of zebra, Thompson's gazelle
and buffalo, and the other species that make it their home.
The lodge design is elegant but unobtrusive and inspired by
a traditional African village. Each of the rooms is comfortably
furnished and is situated in a beehive thatch cottage, reached
by a wooden walkway.
|
|
|
|
The main areas are set under huge domes of
thatch with stunning views from the open verandas over the Serengeti.
A crystal clear horizon pool offers a cooling break between
game drives.
Spend two nights at The Serengeti Serena on a full board
basis.
After breakfast, a morning game drive followed
by a visit to the Olduvai Gorge (optional!).
Olduvai Gorge was made famous by the archaeological work of
Louis and Mary Leakey on their discovery of Australopithecus
boisei. After visiting the museum, one crosses the gorge
to visit the Shifting Sands. This dune in the middle of the
plains, miles from anywhere, is a fine example of a barchan
dune standing about nine metres high and one hundred metres
along its curve. The constant wind blowing from the east pushes
sand grains from the back of the dune up its firm windward slope
before toppling over the steep leeward side. In this way the
dune marches westward, grain-by-grain!!
After a packed lunch you will take an afternoon game drive en
route to The Ngorongoro Serena Lodge.
At the eastern edge of the vast Serengeti, the great-buttressed
slopes of the Ngorongoro Crater rise up through lichen-covered
forests to an altitude of seven thousand feet above sea level. Nearly
three million years old, the ancient caldera shelters one of
the most beautiful wildlife havens left on earth. Some of Africa's
last black rhino are protected within its rim, black maned lions
stalk the grasslands, flamingos crowd the soda lakes and giant-tusked
elephants wander the forests. Towering euphorbias cling to the
crater walls and on the floor; fever and fig tree forests give
shade to an awe-inspiring array of creatures.
|
Situated on the rim of this incredible dormant
volcano, Ngorongoro Serena Lodge is the ideal place from which
to view one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Built
of native stone and covered with ivy, the lodge blends in masterfully
with its surrounds.
|
|
View down into the crater |
Most of the luxury en-suite
bedrooms have private terraces with views of the crater floor
that teems with game. This volcano and surrounding land is a
dedicated World Heritage Site and are part of a vast conservation
area where the Masai continue to graze their cattle and live
in harmony with the wildlife as they have done since time immemorial.
|
| |
During your full day at Ngorongoro, descend
into the crater itself, a bumpy but exciting experience, to
spend a full day exploring this fascinating area. One of the
unexplained mysteries of this wildlife paradise is that only
male elephant live there and there are no impala or giraffe
at all on the floor of this vast caldera. Spend two nights at
The Ngorongoro Serena Lodge on a full board basis.
After breakfast and another game drive in
the crater, drive back to Arusha arriving at Mountain Village
early afternoon.
Spend one night at Mountain Village Lodge on a dinner,
bed and breakfast basis.
After an early breakfast transfer back to
Kilimanjaro Airport, in time to connect with your flight to
Johannesburg.
