The extensive Central Kalahari Game
Reserve (51 800 km²) is one of the largest wilderness areas in the world.
The reserve is typical of the vast areas of the Kalahari and offers an unsurpassed
wilderness experience. The low vegetation, wide bare pans and vast open spaces
combine to create an atmosphere of silence and peace. Nxai Pan is an ancient lake
bed where the wildlife congregate from December to March. Large herds of Springbok
graze on the pan. The most common mammals are springbok, oryx, wildebeest, hartebeest,
bat eared fox. Predators include lion, leopard, black backed jackal and brown
hyena. Bird life is also extremely interesting with 150 species having been recorded.
