The golden age of luxury train travel has been renewed in the heart of the African bush. Rovos Rail, with its private station and headquarters at Capital Park in Pretoria, provides unique train and air safaris through and over some of the most spectacular scenery in Africa.

Rovos Rail operates two trains of 20 carriages each, which have been splendidly rebuilt with meticulous attention to detail, comfort and luxury. Steam, Diesel or Electric locomotives operating at various stages of the journey draw the trains.
These classic trains, called "The Pride of Africa", each carry a maximum of 72 passengers who are accommodated in the most spacious train suites in the world. With fine wood paneling, period Edwardian features as well as every modern convenience and comfort, the air-conditioned suites carry two people offering the option of twin or double beds. The Royal Suites (16m²) each have their own private lounge area and feature a full en-suite bathroom with shower and Victorian bath. The Deluxe Suites (11m²) each have a lounge area and private bathroom with shower. The use of traditional furnishings and period décor ensure an atmosphere of elegance and grandeur in the Dining, Lounge and Observation cars.
The discreet and caring staff are available to meet the guests needs around the clock, whilst an enthusiastic team of chefs ensures the guests enjoy superb meals complemented by outstanding South African wines.

OUR REGULAR JOURNEYS WEEKLY

Very successful overnight trips from one to ten days have been undertaken with special interest groups. Business incentive groups, historical tours, private parties and bird shoots are just a few of the special charters we have hosted during the past 11 years. Within reason, and subject to availability, the chartered train can go anywhere there is a railway line in the sub continent of Africa. Some popular two day trips include Sun City Golf and Game, Dulstroom Trout fishing and Malelane game viewing.

The costing for these trips is based on distance, time, the number in the party and the number of coaches required to house the party. Therefore, each charter request has to be individually costed.

ANNUALLY

Pretoria to Swakopmund in Namibia in May, a distance of 3 400 kms: 7 days
African Collage in June from Pretoria to Cape Town via Maputo, Durban, Bloemfontein, Graaff-Reinet George, Knysna and Worcester: 8 days
Golf Safari in April and September a round trip from Pretoria to White River, Swaziland, Durban, Ladysmith, Sun City and back to Pretoria: 8 Days
Dar Es Salaam from Cape Town to Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania in July,a distance of 6100 kms: 13 days

Our 13-coach, 42 bed Edwardian Train is available at certain times of the year for private charter. The coaches, which were collected from the far corners of the country, have been painstakingly rebuilt and refurbished and, while offering the same spaciousness as the classic trains, offer discerning travelers the last word in nostalgic comfort and style.

LUNCH AND DINNER TRIPS

During the course of the year we have many 3 to 4 hour Lunch and Dinner excursions where we entertain a maximum of 72 guest.

THE FORMAT OF THE DAY OR EVENING WOULD BE AS FOLLOWS:

10h00 to 11h30 or 18h30 to 19h00

Guests arrive at Rovos Rail's Capital Park Station. Champagne, orange juice and canapés are served on arrival. Musicians play light classical music in the background. A Steam Locomotive will be parked on the platform adjoining the station lounge, allowing the guests numerous photographic opportunities.

11h30 to 11h45 or 19h30 to 19h45

The locomotive will move off the platform to fetch the train and bring it on to the platform. While all the participants are together and their attention is focused, this is an ideal time for speeches or presentations.

12h00 or 20h00

Departure for a circular panoramic tour around Pretoria

16h30 or 23h00

Arrive back at Capital Park Station

Drinks will be served in the Observation and Lounge cars on departure.
Lunch or Dinner would be served at 13h30 or 20h30. Our menus reflect an accent on fresh local ingredients, and traditional dishes such as game are a specialty. Our lunches and dinners offer a starter, a choice of fish, meat or vegetarian dish followed by a tempting dessert. Fine wines from some of South Africa's renowned cellars and estates complement the meals.

Rovos Rail is a private train company running on the rails of the National Railways and our tariff is determined by the number of coaches run at a given time and the distance covered: added to which are the costs of locomotive crews, train inspections and watering facilities. Therefore, each charter request has to be individually costed. The following itineraries and costs will illustrate a few options. Please note the prices are approximate and are valid until the 30th September 2002.

ONE NIGHT

An early evening departure from Capital Park Station, Pretoria.
Dinner and overnight on board. The train will stop at about midnight for ± 6 hours. Return to Capital Park after a leisurely breakfast.

Price R99 000 up to 42 passengers in 21 suites.

TWO NIGHTS

Day 1: An early evening departure from Capital Park Station, Pretoria.
Dinner and overnight on the train.
Day 2: After breakfast disembark for a day of activities off the train.
Return to the train late afternoon for dinner and overnight on the train.
Day 3: Disembark at Capital Park Station, Pretoria after breakfast.
