ITINERARY
Day 1 - 2 CAPE TOWN [Lion's Head Lodge Bx1 - -]
Tour starts at 14:00 in the afternoon with a briefing and departure meeting.
Over the next two days we explore Cape Town and the “mother city's” many
attractions. A day drive around the peninsula will take us through the Cape
Point Nature reserve, visit the Cape of Good Hope, Chapman’s Peak drive
and the harbour at Hout Bay. We will have time to enjoy the Cape’s
famous beaches and the V&A Waterfront. Optional visit to Robben Island
(own expense). Meals at a variety of local restaurants (own expense).
Day 3 STELLENBOSCH [Lodge B - D]
An early start sees us climb Table Mountain for a final view over this
beautiful city before we head out of Cape Town and make our way to Stellenbosch.
A well deserved lunch on one of the vineyards (own expense) before we get
into the wine tasting for the afternoon. We’ll visit a few of the famous
vineyards in the region. A cellar tour allows us to learn more about the
art of wine making before heading to Gordon’s Bay and our lodge for
the evening.
Day 4 DE HOOP NATURE RESERVE [cabins BLD]
In season (May – December), Hermanus offers some of the best land
based whale watching in the world, before we visit Cape Agulhas – the
southern most point of Africa, and on to De Hoop Nature reserve. The reserve
covers 35 000 hectares of the cape floral kingdom and is home to the Cape
Mountain Zebra and Bontebok. The reserve also protects a section of the marine
habitat including important breeding waters for the Southern Right Whale
and over 250 species of birds, offering the avid birdwatcher great entertainment.
Day 5 - 6 KNYSNA FOREST [chalets BLD]
We cross the Overberg farming region with its extensive wheat fields and
stop for a walk along the rugged and beautiful coastline. Indigenous Tsitsikamma
forests line our route to Knysna and we wind our way into the town of Knysna
nestled on the lagoon. We visit the heads before moving on to our cabins
in the surrounding forests. The following day is free to visit the Featherbed
Nature Reserve (own expense), explore the wonderful craft shops in town or
spend the day relaxing on the beach.
Day 7 – 8 BAVIAANSKLOOF [chalets BLD]
Our next two nights are spent exploring the wilderness region of the Baviaanskloof.
Leaving the coast we head over the picturesque Prince Alfred pass and into
the Baviaanskloofberge, named after the Dutch word for the Baboon. This little
known wilderness area is a hidden jewel, a stunning region of deep valleys,
wild rivers and spectacular mountain peaks. We spend the next day on a hike
through this wild area. Mountain biking and horse riding are optional excursions
(own expense).
Day 9 - 10 ADDO ELEPHANT NATIONAL PARK [chalet / permanent
tents Bx2 Lx2 Dx1]
A conservation success and now famous for its elephants, Addo Elephant
N.P. offers a unique wildlife experience. The park has recently been enlarged
to form an ecologically important corridor between the older parts of the
park and the coastal areas. We spend two days in the national park on game
drives in search of elephant, black rhino, lion, buffalo and leopard. Evening
viewing at the floodlit waterhole allows us to watch the nocturnal animals.
Day 11 PORT ELIZABETH [hotel BL-]
A final morning game drive and we leave the park and head to the costal
town of Port Elizabeth. Named after the governor of the cape colonies wife,
Elizabeth Donkin. The city lies on the Algoa Bay and it’s history is
entwined with the Cape Colony and early explorers. We spend the afternoon
relaxing on the beach before heading out to a local restaurant for dinner
(own expense).
